About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 20 problems solving a one step equation where the numbers are decimals or fractions.

The equation sheets on this site sit either side of this one. Determining Variable Value has variables on both sides and uses negatives, which is a year or two later; the word-problem solving family is grade 4, whole numbers, with the equation already written out. The two forms this standard names - x plus p equals q, and p times x equals q, with p and q nonnegative rational - had nothing. Only addition and multiplication appear, which is what the standard says and is not an omission: subtracting solves the first and dividing solves the second, so both inverse operations are already in the sheet. Every fraction answer is in lowest terms, since the student is not handed the denominator. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.

Student objectives

  • Undo an addition to solve for a variable.
  • Undo a multiplication to solve for a variable.
  • Work accurately when the numbers are decimals or fractions.

Everyday practice

  • Say which operation undoes the one in the equation.
  • Check an answer by putting it back in.
  • Decide whether the answer should be bigger or smaller than the number given.
