A sheet on this site called Determining Variable Value to Balance Equations is 2x + 3 = 5x - 9 written out, which is algebra and a good deal later than this. The point of the picture is that the equation arrives before the notation does: a student who cannot yet read n + 3 = 11 can still see that lifting three circles off both pans leaves the box against eight, and that is what maintaining equality means. Some scales carry several identical boxes, which is the multiplication form of the same idea. Every wrong answer is a mistake a student actually makes - the circles beside the box, the pile on the other side, or adding where the picture subtracts. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
