About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 12 objects to estimate the length of, in customary and metric units.
This worksheet names a familiar object and a unit and asks for the best estimate of its length. The two estimating sheets already on the site fix the number and ask for the unit - the height of a refrigerator is about six blank - so neither ever asks a student to produce a number, which is what estimating to the nearest whole unit means. Here the unit is fixed and the number is the question. The four options are powers of ten apart, and that is what makes the answer key defensible: a pencil is about nineteen centimeters, and offering fifteen, nineteen and twenty-two would be asking for a measurement rather than an estimate, since all three are arguable. Offering two, nineteen, a hundred and ninety and one thousand nine hundred asks the only question an estimate can be marked on, which is order of magnitude. Customary and metric alternate. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
