Counting Faces, Edges and Vertices of Solids Worksheet Download

This worksheet draws a solid figure with its hidden edges dashed and asks the student to count one of its attributes. The figures are limited to the solids named in the standard - spheres, cylinders, rectangular and triangular prisms, and rectangular and triangular pyramids. Face, edge and vertex counts are only asked about the prisms and pyramids, because how many faces or edges a cylinder or sphere has depends on which convention a book follows; the curved solids are asked instead how many triangular, rectangular or flat circular faces they have.

About this worksheet

Students look at a solid figure and count an attribute of it, such as its faces of a given shape, its edges or its vertices.

Student objectives

  • Count the flat sides (faces) on a 3D shape
  • Count the edges where two faces meet
  • Count the corners (vertices) of a solid figure
  • Recognize common solids like cubes, pyramids, and prisms

Everyday practice

  • Count the corners and edges of a cereal box or gift box
  • Describe the shape of a soup can or ball to someone
  • Figure out how many sides a dice has to color each one
  • Count the faces on a Rubik's cube or building block
