About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 3 problems counting fractional measurements from a set of data and recording them in a frequency table.
This worksheet shows a set of measurements written as fractions and asks the student to count how many times each value appears, recording the totals in a frequency table. Counting fractions is a different job from counting words or whole numbers, because the values have to be recognised as the same number first. Every value on the scale appears at least once, so a student can always tell a value they missed from one that was never there, and the whole data set uses a single denominator - equivalence belongs in a comparing sheet, where it can be asked directly instead of quietly making the answer key arguable. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
Student objectives
- Count how many times each fractional value appears in a data set.
- Record counts in a frequency table with fractional rows.
- Recognize the same fraction written more than once in a data set.
Everyday practice
- Sort a handful of measurements into groups before counting them.
- Check that the frequencies add up to how many measurements there were.
- Write a measurement as a fraction of a unit.
