About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 8 problems choosing which tool measures an object to the nearest centimeter or quarter inch.
This worksheet asks children which tool measures an object to the unit named - a centimeter or a quarter inch. Unlike the sheets that choose a tool by size, every object here is small enough for a ruler, so size decides nothing and the unit decides everything: a centimeter ruler cannot give an answer in quarter inches however short the object is. The two long tools are still offered, so a child who reads only the unit and not the object has options to reject, and one who reads only the object does too. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
Student objectives
- Choose a ruler that measures in the unit the question asks for.
- Recognize that a centimeter ruler cannot give an answer in inches.
- Rule out a tool that is the wrong length as well as one in the wrong unit.
Everyday practice
- Look at a ruler and find both the centimeter and the inch edge.
- Say which edge you would use for a measurement given in quarter inches.
- Choose a tool before measuring, then check it was the right one.
