About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 10 problems adding mixed numbers on an open number line.

This worksheet adds mixed numbers on an open number line. Unlike the sheet that draws both hops for the student, here the line is blank and the student picks their own jumps - count on by whole numbers first, then by parts - while the answer key shows one way of doing it. The minor ticks are the common denominator, so both numbers land on ticks whichever route is taken. It is the mixed number version of the counting-on strategy that the decimal sheets already teach. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.

Student objectives

  • Add mixed numbers by counting on.
  • Choose useful jumps on an open number line.
  • Use a number line marked in the common denominator.

Everyday practice

  • Add two lengths by counting up.
  • Work out a finishing time from a starting time.
  • Check a mixed number sum on a ruler.
