About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 10 problems choosing the one step equation that models a situation.

The site turns words into expressions and words into inequalities, but not words into equations - the middle step, and the one this standard names. All four choices carry the same two numbers in the same places, so the only thing that varies is the operation and nothing can be answered by matching digits from the story. The value of the variable is always a multiple of the other number, which means all four equations solve to whole numbers: without that the multiplication choice often has no whole solution and can be struck off on sight, quietly turning a four-choice question into a three-choice one. Students are not asked to solve - that is the next standard along. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.

Student objectives

  • Decide which operation a situation describes.
  • Write a one step equation with one variable.
  • Tell what the variable stands for.

Everyday practice

  • Say what is unknown before writing anything.
  • Describe a situation as an equation out loud.
  • Check that the equation says what the story says.
