About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 10 problems using the distributive property to break a factor into tens and ones.

This worksheet uses the distributive property to break a two-digit factor into its tens and its ones, so that eight times forty-seven becomes eight times forty plus eight times seven. The existing distributive property sheet splits a factor arbitrarily - sixteen times four written as seven times four plus nine times four - which is true and is a third grade idea, but it is not the split anyone actually uses. Breaking forty-seven into forty and seven is the one that turns into written multiplication a year later. The tens part is written as forty rather than four, because the whole point is that the pieces are worth what place value says they are worth. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
