About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 12 problems using the order of operations to evaluate an expression with decimals.
Three order of operations worksheets on this site draw their numbers from 2 to 10, and one uses fractions. None uses decimals. The rule is the same either way, which is exactly why this is worth practicing separately: a student who can work 8 + 3 x 4 can still add before multiplying once the arithmetic is loud enough to drown out the order. Every step here lands on two decimal places or fewer and never goes below zero, so the difficulty stays in the sequencing. The worked steps print on the answer key. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
Student objectives
- Work an expression in the correct order when the numbers are decimals.
- Keep a running decimal value accurate through several steps.
- Recognize that the order does not change when the numbers do.
Everyday practice
- Say which operation comes first before doing any of them.
- Check a decimal answer against a rough whole-number estimate.
- Work the brackets before anything outside them.
