Picture a crisp autumn evening, with a family sitting down to dinner in a little hut in their backyard. Above them, the roof is made of green branches, and between the leaves, tiny stars twinkle. Paper chains and children's drawings hang from the walls. This cozy hut is called a sukkah, and it is the heart of Sukkot, a Jewish harvest festival that lasts seven days.

Those seven days (eight in some communities) begin five days after Yom Kippur, a solemn day of prayer. In the days between, families build a sukkah with walls of wood or cloth and a roof of branches or leaves, with gaps so you can see the stars. Many families eat their meals there, and some even sleep inside!

Sleeping under a leafy roof might sound odd, but it connects families to the past. Sukkot remembers the huts the Israelites lived in while traveling through the desert long ago, and the simple shelters farmers used in their fields at harvest time. Can you imagine a home that you take down after the holiday? That is a sukkah, a temporary shelter.

Harvest time brings another treasure to Sukkot: four plants known as the four kinds. The etrog is a citron, a bumpy yellow fruit that looks like a lemon and smells sweet. The lulav is a palm branch, tied together with twigs of myrtle and willow. During the festival, people hold the etrog and the bundle together and wave them in different directions, even up and down.

After all that waving, everyone heads back to the sukkah, where the decorations are waiting. Children hang paper chains, drawings, and fruit from the roof beams, so no two sukkahs look quite alike. Guests are welcome too, and many families invite friends and neighbors to share a meal. It may be a wobbly hut with a see-through roof, but on Sukkot it holds a table full of friends, family, and stars.
