About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 8 problems finding the difference of the shaded parts of two groups of shapes.

This worksheet shows a subtraction expression as two groups of coloured shapes and asks which fraction is equivalent to the difference of the shaded parts. The second group is the amount taken away, with a stroke through each removed part so the pieces stay countable rather than being crossed out. The two groups are the same shape cut different ways, so a shaded half has to be seen as three of the sixths beside it. About two in five problems need the fraction parts regrouped, which is where subtracting mixed numbers actually gets hard and the one thing this model shows better than an algorithm. Every choice is written over the common denominator, so counting parts and reducing cannot disagree. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.

Student objectives

  • Find the difference of shaded parts shown in two models.
  • Regroup a whole into parts to subtract.
  • Subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators.

Everyday practice

  • Find how much pizza is left after some is eaten.
  • Take one part-full tray away from another.
  • Work out what remains from a partly used set.
