About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 6 word problems dividing a mixed number amount equally among a number of people or parts.
This worksheet follows a released test item, and all three of that item's wrong answers are reproduced as generated distractors: the division done backwards, which makes the share larger than the whole; the mixed number split up, with the whole part divided and the fraction part carried along untouched; and the fraction part on its own. A student who converts to an improper fraction first cannot produce any of them. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
Student objectives
- Divide a mixed number by a whole number in context.
- Reject an answer larger than the amount shared.
- Reject an answer that split the mixed number up.
Everyday practice
- Share an amount like 4 1/2 pounds between friends.
- Say why each share must be smaller than the whole.
- Change a mixed number to an improper fraction first.
