About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 6 problems selecting every shape of a named type from four quadrilaterals.
This worksheet shows four quadrilaterals and asks children to select every one that matches a named type. Choosing from several at once is different work from a single yes or no - a definition has to be held against four figures, and elimination does not help. Between one and three of the four always qualify, so the answer is never everything or nothing. Shapes are judged by measuring their sides, parallel pairs and right angles rather than by what they are called. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
Student objectives
- Select every shape of a named type from a group of quadrilaterals.
- Hold a definition against several figures at once.
- Recognize that more than one shape in a group can share a name.
Everyday practice
- Sort a pile of cut-out quadrilaterals by name, allowing a shape in more than one pile.
- Find every rectangle in a room, including the square ones.
- Explain why a square belongs in both the square pile and the rectangle pile.
