About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 4 solid figures where students select every net that folds to make it.

This worksheet shows a solid figure and six nets, and asks the student to select every one that folds to make it - two or three of them do. A cube has eleven different nets and a rectangular prism has just as many, so choosing one net as the answer teaches something false; a select-all question is the honest version. The figures are limited to cubes and rectangular prisms because their nets can be generated and checked by construction: a row of four faces with a flap above and a flap below folds into a box wherever the flaps sit. The wrong answers are an arrangement with the right number of faces that will not close, a straight row of six, a net one face short, and a correct net of a different solid. Sheets can be customized or printed for practice.

Student objectives

  • Select every net that folds into a solid.
  • Recognize that a solid has more than one net.
  • Tell a valid net from an arrangement that will not fold.

Everyday practice

  • Notice that a box can be flattened more than one way.
  • Check several patterns before cutting card.
  • Compare two ways of unfolding a package.
