About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 8 problems cutting a parallelogram along its height and rearranging it into a rectangle.

The standard asks students to develop the formula using a variety of methods, not only to apply it. Every area worksheet on this site hands over a formula and asks for a number; none shows where one comes from. For a parallelogram the derivation is a picture a student can do with scissors - the piece cut off the left is exactly the piece missing on the right. The question asks for the rectangle's dimensions and not only its area, because a student who reads off base by height has understood why the slant side never appears in the formula, while one who just multiplies two numbers may not have noticed which two. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.

Student objectives

  • See that cutting along the height and sliding makes a rectangle.
  • Give the rectangle its base and height.
  • Explain why the slant side is not in the formula.

Everyday practice

  • Cut a paper parallelogram and rearrange it.
  • Say why the area does not change when a piece is moved.
  • Describe the rectangle a parallelogram turns into.
