About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 6 problems choosing which point on a number line best shows a fraction, using only benchmarks.
This worksheet asks children to place a fraction on a number line that shows nothing but the benchmarks 0, one half and 1. With no divisions to count, the position has to be reasoned out - seven twelfths is a little more than a half - which is what using benchmark fractions actually means. The candidate points are kept well apart so the choice can be settled by estimation rather than by measuring. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
Student objectives
- Decide roughly where a fraction falls using 0, one half and 1 as benchmarks.
- Choose the point on a number line that best shows a given fraction.
- Judge whether a fraction is less than, near, or more than one half.
Everyday practice
- Say whether a fraction is closer to 0, a half, or 1 before working anything out.
- Mark roughly where three quarters would be on a line with only the ends labeled.
- Compare two fractions by deciding which side of a half each one sits.
