About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 10 problems selecting which numbers in a list are perfect squares.

The other perfect-square worksheets on this site start from a number that already is one - they hand you 7 and ask for 49, or hand you 49 and ask for 7. Identifying a perfect square is a decision about a number you were told nothing about, which is how the idea turns up in life: 48 tiles will not make a square and 49 will. Every wrong option here sits within two of a real square, so the only way through is to know the squares or to test them. More than one option can be correct. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.

Student objectives

  • Decide whether a number is a perfect square.
  • Recall the squares up to 400.
  • Reject a number that is close to a square but is not one.

Everyday practice

  • Say the squares up to 144 from memory.
  • Decide whether a number of tiles will make a square.
  • Explain why 50 is not a perfect square.

Standards
