About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 15 problems finding the greatest or least whole number that makes a comparison true (within 1,000,000).
This worksheet asks children to find the greatest or least whole number that makes a comparison true, using numbers up to 1,000,000. Several problems use round numbers on purpose - the greatest whole number less than 400,000 is 399,999, which means borrowing across three zeros at once, and that is where place value understanding either holds or does not. Others are set as word problems so the comparison has to be pulled out of a sentence first. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
Student objectives
- Find the greatest whole number less than a given number up to 1,000,000.
- Find the least whole number greater than a given number up to 1,000,000.
- Subtract one across several zeros, as in 400,000 to 399,999.
Everyday practice
- Say the number that comes just before 500,000 out loud.
- Given a price cap like $250,000, name the most a house could cost in whole dollars.
- Count backwards from a round number such as 700,000 and notice which digits change.
