About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 5 problems finding how many times an outcome was expected and counting how many times it happened.

This is the arithmetic underneath comparing an experiment with its known probability: one number is what should have happened and the other is what did. The results are recorded as tally marks rather than printed as a number, because a number would make the second answer a copy from the table while only the first was work - and counting a tally is the recording half of demonstrating an experiment, the form results actually arrive in. Twenty trials and a section count that divides it keep the expected number whole. The expected and actual counts differ on most problems but not all, since a sheet where they never agree teaches that results always miss and one where they often agree teaches that the tally is decoration. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.

Student objectives

  • Work out an expected number of results from a known probability.
  • Count results recorded as tally marks.
  • Put the expected number and the actual number side by side.

Everyday practice

  • Count a set of tally marks in groups of five.
  • Work out how many of twenty spins should land on one color.
