About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 4 word problems where students expand an expression using the distributive property.
This worksheet sets up a situation where each of several people receives three different things, writes the total as a number times a sum of three, and asks which expression is equivalent. Three terms rather than two is the whole difficulty: with only two a student can write the products and join them without noticing anything, while the mistakes worth catching - distributing over only the first term, or joining the products with the wrong sign - are invisible. Each wrong answer is one of those real slips and uses the same four numbers, so nothing can be spotted by matching digits. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
