About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 8 problems finding the difference between two named measures of center for a small data set.

Every mean, median and mode worksheet on this site asks for one measure and stops, so a student can finish them all knowing three procedures and never noticing the three answers are different numbers. This sheet asks for the difference between two of them, which is the form a released Oklahoma test item takes, and it cannot be answered by running one procedure. The wrong answers are the other pairings - subtract the mean from the mode instead of the median and you land on a choice - so the question is about knowing which measure is which rather than about subtraction. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.

Student objectives

  • Find the mean, median and mode of a small data set.
  • Subtract one measure of center from another.
  • Tell the three measures apart when both are needed at once.

Everyday practice

  • Find the mean and the median of the same list and see which is larger.
  • Ask why one high value pulls the mean but not the median.
  • Compare two weeks of scores using both measures.
