About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 6 problems using fraction models to decide which of two fractions is greater or less.

This worksheet asks children which of two fractions is greater or less, using shaded models to decide. Half the questions ask for greater and half for less, so a child cannot simply find the bigger picture without reading the question. The two fractions always differ by at least a tenth of the whole, which matters more than it sounds - a pair like two fifths and three eighths differs by two pixels on the page, and no model can settle it. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.

Student objectives

  • Use a fraction model to decide which of two fractions is greater or less.
  • Read the question carefully, since some ask for greater and some for less.
  • Compare fractions with different denominators using a picture rather than a rule.

Everyday practice

  • Compare two glasses filled to different levels and say which holds more.
  • Cut two pizzas into different numbers of slices and compare one slice from each.
  • Shade two identical strips of paper and decide which shows more.
