Each worksheet has 10 patterns where students choose the rule, written with a variable, that finds the next number.
This worksheet shows a number pattern and asks which rule, written on a variable, finds the next number. All four choices carry the same number - n plus 4, n minus 4, n times 4, n divided by 4 - which is the whole point of the question: the step is handed over four times and what the student has to identify is the operation. Vary the number as well and a pattern can be matched by subtracting the first two terms without ever reading the operator. Four terms are always shown, because two cannot tell a halving from a take-away: 8 then 4 is both. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
