About this worksheet

Each worksheet has 12 expressions where students choose the equivalent rearrangement.

This worksheet shows a product of three numbers and asks which expression is equal to it. The property sheets on this site all name a property or fill in a missing digit, and none of them use one - knowing that a product can be reordered is worth nothing until a student sees that reordering four times twenty-seven times twenty-five puts the four and the twenty-five together and turns it into one hundred times twenty-seven. One factor pair always multiplies to a round number, and it is never printed side by side. Every wrong answer changes an operation rather than the grouping, because any regrouping of a product is equal to it and the question would otherwise have four right answers. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.

Student objectives

  • Rearrange a product to make it easier.
  • Recognize a valid regrouping of factors.
  • Apply the commutative and associative properties.

Everyday practice

  • Reorder a calculation to do it in your head.
  • Group prices to add them quickly.
  • Spot the easy pair in a multiplication.
