This worksheet shows a shape with curved edges on a grid and asks which perimeter is most reasonable. A curved edge cannot be counted off a grid, which is the whole point: the standard does not ask for the circumference formula, which is a grade seven idea, but for an argument that a value is reasonable. The argument available at grade five is that the way around a circle is about three times the way across it, and that a curve bulging out of a box is longer than the straight line it replaces. Every wrong answer is at least a third away from the true value, so the argument settles the question and the arithmetic is not needed. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
