About this worksheet
Each worksheet has 8 problems finding the sum of the shaded parts of two groups of shapes.
This worksheet shows an addition expression as two groups of coloured shapes and asks which fraction is equivalent to the sum of the shaded parts. The two groups are the same shape cut different ways - hexagons in halves beside hexagons in sixths - so the student has to see that a shaded half is three of the sixths next to it, which is renaming to a common denominator wearing a picture. Every choice is written over the common denominator, so counting parts and reducing cannot disagree. Two of the four choices sit near the value you get by adding the part-shaded pieces and forgetting the whole ones, which is the mistake this model invites. Shapes change from problem to problem between hexagons, circles and squares. Sheets can be customized, turned into flash cards, or assigned for online learning.
